English Firsthand Cafe: Supplementary Activities

EF1 UNIT 4

That was on the book. Now it is…

Preparation: None

Procedure: Work in groups of four. Each student puts about five objects (pens, erasers, coins, pencil cases, cell phones, etc.) on a desk. The objects are arranged to show a variety of different locations (on, in, under, to the right of, etc.). One student closes her eyes while the others rearrange the objects. The student whose eyes were closed then looks at the objects and tries to identify which objects were moved (E.g., The eraser was on the pencil case. Now it’s to the right of the book. The pen was under the cell phone. Now it’s behind the box cutter.).

Find your roommate

Preparation: Buy or find two same-issue magazines with lots of pictures of rooms. If this is not possible, use one set of pictures, and make two copies of each. You will need two of the same pictures for every two students (i.e., if 30 students, then 15 pictures x 2). If there are an uneven number of students, make one three-picture set, or participate yourself.

Procedure: Randomly distribute the pictures--one picture to each student. Tell the students not to show their pictures to anyone else. Have them carefully study their pictures for one minute. When one minute is up, they should put their pictures face down on their desks. Then have them stand up, circulate, and try to find the student with the same picture. To do this, they will need to ask questions. You may want to elicit possible questions and write them on the board, adding ones which no one mentions. Some examples are: What does your room look like? Is there a ...? Are there any ...? Has it got a ...? Where is the ...? Is there a ... on/in/under/next to the ...? What color/shape/style is the ...? When two students think that they have the same room, they should show each other their pictures. If they are not the same, they should again put them face down on their desks and continue their search.

Variation: Find pictures for half the number of students in your class. Cut the pictures into two parts. The students circulate and find the person with the other half of their picture.
