English Firsthand Cafe: Supplementary Activities

EF2 UNIT 10

Tell a story like this one. Ask the students to imagine it. They may want to close their eyes.

Once upon a time, there was a rich man. • He gave a big party for many people he knew. One of the guests was a man named Nasrudin. He wore everyday clothes, not fancy “party clothes.” At the party, no one talked to him. • The host didn’t even say hello.

Nasrudin went home. He put on very nice clothes. Then he came back to the party. This time, everyone noticed his beautiful clothes. •
The rich man invited Nasrudin to sit next to him. Nasrudin did. Wonderful food was served. Nasrudin picked up the food. It put it in his pockets. He said, “Eat well, my coat. Enjoy this wonderful food. Eat all you want, my beautiful clothes”

Everyone was shocked. The rich man said, “What are you doing?”
(STOP here the first time you tell the story.).

It seems you invited my clothes, not me.”

Read the story a second time. When every you get to a dot (•), stop. Have students describe the character and his clothes each time.

This is based on an activity we learned from Mario Rinvolucri. Nasrudin stories come from the Sufi tradition.
