English Firsthand Cafe: Supplementary Activities

EF2 UNIT 9

Optional warm-up activity
It’s a match.

Preparation: None

Procedure: Students work in pairs. Read the following problems to the class. Have them write as many pieces of advice as possible for each problem. The advice should use the "advice stem" given. Give them about one or one and a half minutes for each item.

1. I have a cold.
You should...

2. I’m really bored.
Why don’t you...?

3. I always forget new English words.
Have you tried...?

4. My TV doesn’t work.
Maybe you should...

5. I had an argument with my parents.
If I were you, I’d...

After they've written their advice, pairs merge into groups of four. They read their advice for each item. They get one point to ideas they wrote that their new partners didn't write.

Variation: Do the activity as a match game. At first, students each write one piece of advice for each item. Then divide the class into groups of three. They compare their advice. When two people have given the same advice, the team gets one point. If all three people wrote the same advice, they get two points. The team with the most points is the winner.
